Overview & First Impressions

Our journey began at Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), often lauded as one of the world's best. Arriving a generous six hours before departure at Terminal 3, the reviewer made ample time to explore both the airport's renowned facilities and the iconic Jewel. After a seamless check-in at the business class counter, which notably had no queue, two hours were dedicated to experiencing the architectural marvel and retail haven of the Jewel. This pre-flight exploration set a relaxed and impressive tone for the trip.

Returning to Terminal 3, the reviewer cleared passport control and proceeded to the SilverKris Lounge. The business class section of the lounge was remarkably spacious, offering an abundance of seating areas and an extensive, seemingly endless buffet. While opportunities to utilize the showers and meeting rooms were missed, a delightful surprise awaited: a cart of Valentine's Day treats, a thoughtful touch that further elevated the already impressive lounge experience. Beyond the lounge, Changi Airport continued to captivate with its complimentary attractions, including the tranquil Butterfly Garden, the unique Cactus Garden, and the serene Water Lily Garden, all accessible within the airport premises. The flight departed from gate B10, where the reviewer finally caught sight of the aircraft: a 5-year-old Airbus A350-900, ready to embark on the long-haul journey to San Francisco.

The Details

Upon boarding, the reviewer settled into seat 20K, located on the right side of the cabin. A thoughtful welcome package of slippers, a pillow, and a blanket awaited at the seat. Shortly after, flight attendants offered a choice of champagne or water as a pre-departure beverage, with champagne being the chosen refreshment. A detailed examination of the seat revealed a highly spacious and well-cushioned design. Storage options were plentiful and intelligently placed, including compartments under the footwell, beneath the side armrest, and within a dedicated cabinet to the right. A slimmer storage space, a reading light, and various outlets (though some were noted as outdated) were also found to the right of the seat. The in-flight entertainment (IFE) console was conveniently located below these, housing headphones and a bottle of water.

The tray table, housed by the armrest, was impressively massive and offered excellent versatility, capable of swiveling forward, backward, up, and down. Seat controls, positioned to the left, provided numerous options for personalized customization. Three additional reading lights in the upper left corner of the seat offered further adjustable illumination, complemented by individual lights above the seat. A minor critique was the absence of individual air vents. Once airborne, the IFE system proved to be a highlight, boasting an extensive selection of 401 movie choices, encompassing both new and old releases across movies, TV shows, music, and podcasts. Complimentary Wi-Fi was available for business class passengers, though its speeds were consistently slow throughout the flight. Converting the seat into a bed revealed a massive and very comfortable sleeping surface, even surpassing the United Polaris bed in comfort. However, two significant flaws were noted: a lack of privacy due to the seat's configuration allowing views into other seats at certain angles, and an awkwardly positioned, small footwell that might pose comfort challenges for non-side sleepers.

Service & Amenities

The inflight service commenced with flight attendants distributing hot towels as the aircraft pushed back, followed by a pre-meal service of canapés and drinks. The reviewer, having pre-ordered a special vegan meal, was served a delicious vegan canapé featuring courgette, corn, and mushroom sauté. The main meal service followed, with flight attendants meticulously setting up tray tables with tablecloths and silverware. The appetizer was a mixed tofu vegetable salad, which was deemed decent and paired with a glass of red wine. The main course, a braised tofu dish with fried rice and vegetables, was highly praised for its flavor and satisfying portion. The meal concluded with a refreshing agar jelly with fruit, providing a perfect end to the first service.

After the meal, a flight attendant offered to convert the seat into a bed, allowing the reviewer to explore the onboard lavatories, which were clean, typical in size, and well-stocked with amenities. Roughly eight hours later, the reviewer was gently woken by a flight attendant for the second meal service, with the tray table promptly prepared. This service began with a unique and flavorful squash and chickpea salad with pomegranate vinaigrette dressing, accompanied by a bread roll and another glass of red wine. The entree was a marinara pasta with edamame and vegan meatballs, a pleasantly surprising and delicious mock meat dish. The meal culminated in a delightful vegan chocolate mousse cake. Singapore Airlines was highly commended for its exceptional vegan offerings, noted to be on par with their regular menu choices, showcasing a commitment to diverse and high-quality catering.

Verdict & Who It's For

Singapore Airlines' Business Class offering on the long-haul Singapore to San Francisco route proved to be an exceptionally well-rounded experience, earning high praise from the reviewer. The journey was consistently impressive, from the efficiency and pleasantness of the ground service at Changi to the attentive and personable crew in the sky. Every member of the flight staff went out of their way to ensure a welcoming and comfortable environment, contributing significantly to a positive overall impression.

The standout aspects of this flight included the luxurious SilverKris Lounge, the consistently excellent flight staff, and the onboard catering, particularly the high-quality and flavorful vegan meal options. These elements collectively exceeded expectations, solidifying Singapore Airlines' reputation for premium service. While the seat itself was comfortable and spacious, a few critiques were noted: it felt somewhat outdated when compared to some of Singapore Airlines' newer business class products, and it offered a slight lack of privacy in bed mode. Furthermore, the footwell's awkward positioning and limited size could be a minor inconvenience for non-side sleepers. Despite these minor drawbacks, the seat was impeccably maintained and still provided a superior experience compared to many competitors. Given the overall excellence, the reviewer unequivocally stated they would choose to fly Singapore Airlines Business Class again without hesitation. This product is ideal for business travelers prioritizing exceptional service, gourmet dining, and a comfortable, though not cutting-edge, lie-flat experience on long-haul routes.
