Overview & First Impressions

This review details the experience on United Airlines' relatively new Polaris Business Class route from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) in Manila, Philippines. This route, currently served by a Boeing 777-300ER, was launched to significant acclaim, filling a gap in direct flights between the US mainland and the Philippines previously dominated by Philippine Airlines. The scheduled flight time for this daily service is 15 hours and 15 minutes.

Upon clearing security at SFO, the journey began with a visit to the United Polaris Lounge, a two-story flagship facility exclusively for trans-oceanic Polaris passengers or Star Alliance business and first class customers. As a first-time visitor, the lounge offered an exciting prelude to the long-haul flight. The first floor was characterized by quiet seating spaces with ample couches and chairs, ideal for both solo and group travelers, and also housed dedicated quiet suites and shower suites, though these were not utilized during the visit. The second floor, accessible via escalator, featured the main dining and seating areas, a full-service bar, a customer service area, two buffets, and a full-service restaurant. While the restaurant's menu was somewhat limited, its offerings were decent, albeit with small portions, a fact offset by the plentiful buffet options. Restrooms were spacious, well-appointed with amenities, and a beautiful starlight hallway led the way. Despite partially obstructed views of the gates, the two hours spent in the lounge provided a comfortable and well-equipped environment.

Boarding commenced from Gate G2, which was unfortunately crowded and disorganized. The boarding process lacked clear announcements for Group 1, leading to some confusion and a slightly delayed boarding for the reviewer. The seat for this journey was 5 Alpha, located on the left side of the cabin, an odd-numbered seat recommended for enhanced privacy in the Polaris configuration.

Seat, Cabin & IFE

The Polaris Business Class seat, specifically 5 Alpha, was noted for its exceptional comfort and plushness. Upon arrival, a comprehensive set of amenities awaited, including a blanket, a comforter, two pillows (one being the renowned gel pillow), and a TheraBody amenity kit. Pre-departure service included a choice of water or champagne and confirmation of dinner orders, including pre-ordered special meals.

The amenity kit, recently updated by United, was presented in a TheraBody crossbody bag. Its contents were practical and luxurious, featuring socks, an eye mask, a pen, earplugs, facial tissues, a dental kit, and a selection of TheraBody toiletries: a towelette, lip balm, hand cream, hydrating mist, and an eye serum.

The seat itself offered a wealth of features designed for a long-haul journey. Central to the setup was a large, responsive touchscreen for the in-flight entertainment (IFE) system. Adjacent to it were a USB outlet and a small storage area. The tray table, which extended from beneath the TV, was adjustable and of a decent size when unfolded. Overhead, two individual air vents were a welcome feature, often absent in modern cabins. To the right, a small table area housed a cabinet containing headphones and a complimentary bottle of water. Below this, the IFE remote, an AC outlet, another USB outlet, and the headphone jack were conveniently located. An adjustable armrest concealed literature, and a swivel-adjustable reading light completed the setup. Seat controls were intuitively placed to the left, offering extensive customization options. Prior to pushback, pajamas and slippers were distributed, available in small/medium or large/extra-large sizes.

In-flight connectivity was available for a fee; while not free, the $8 charge for 15.5 hours of Wi-Fi was considered a reasonable deal. The Wi-Fi speeds were decent, reportedly faster than many other in-flight systems. The IFE system boasted a vast library with hundreds of movies, TV shows, music, and podcasts, with a useful 'favorites' feature to manage choices. For rest, the lie-flat seat transformed into a comfortable bed, further enhanced by a requested mattress topper. Despite the lack of a turn-down service, the bed was easy to make and, following a specific method, proved to be exceptionally comfortable, allowing for a solid eight hours of sleep—described as one of the best on an airplane, with ample footwell space.

Food, Drinks & Service

The service experience on this United Polaris flight was professional, though it lacked a personal touch. While the flight attendants were consistently smiling and helpful, they were described as somewhat standoffish and not particularly personable, performing their duties without leaving a lasting impression of exceptional service. They were always professional, but did not go above and beyond expectations.

Once airborne, the meal service commenced with hot towels, followed by warm nuts and a selection of drinks. Water was chosen for hydration during the long flight. The dinner service began shortly after, with pre-ordered special meals, such as the vegan option, being served relatively quickly. However, the quality and presentation of the dinner were a major point of critique. The vegan meal was described as unappetizing, bland, mushy, uncreative, and served cold in a cafeteria-style presentation. A preference for individually coursed meals was expressed. Despite the disappointing main course, the unique salt and pepper shakers provided a momentary distraction. The overall sentiment regarding dinner was one of extreme dissatisfaction.

Following dinner, the cabin lights were dimmed, signaling time for rest. The onboard lavatories were basic but functional, featuring a touchless faucet as a modern touch. Approximately two hours before landing, another round of hot towels was distributed, preceding the breakfast service. While the breakfast was deemed slightly more appetizing and enjoyable than dinner, it was still considered uncreative and lacking substance. It was consumed primarily due to hunger following the inadequate dinner. The inflight catering, both in terms of presentation and taste, particularly for special meals, was highlighted as a significant area for improvement, with mixed reviews heard about the standard meal offerings as well.

Verdict & Value

Overall, the United Polaris Business Class experience from San Francisco to Manila was largely positive, earning a solid recommendation, particularly for those traveling between the US mainland and the Philippines. The hard product offered by United's Polaris cabin, including the seat and amenities, was excellent. The lie-flat seat, especially with the addition of a mattress topper, provided an extremely comfortable sleeping environment, facilitating what was described as one of the best sleeps ever experienced on an airplane. The United Polaris Lounge at San Francisco International Airport also stood out as a significant highlight, offering a comprehensive and comfortable pre-flight experience.

However, the flight was not without its drawbacks. The inflight catering received the most substantial critique. Both the dinner and breakfast, particularly the pre-ordered special meal, were found to be unappetizing, bland, uncreative, and poorly presented. This aspect was a major source of disappointment, indicating a clear area for United to improve upon. The service from the flight attendants, while professional and smiling, was noted as being somewhat standoffish and not particularly personable, failing to leave a lasting impression of exceptional care.

Despite these service and catering shortcomings, the route is considered a strong option, especially when compared to reported offerings from competitors like Philippine Airlines on the same route. The reviewer expressed a definite willingness to fly this route again. The journey was booked using 88,000 Air Canada Aeroplan miles, which was considered an excellent value given the cash cost and duration of the flight. This method of booking highlights the potential for significant savings for business travelers utilizing loyalty points for long-haul business class travel.
