Overview & First Impressions
The journey began at Honolulu International Airport (HNL), where after clearing security, a unique private buggy ride transported passengers to the C gates, specifically C4. This gate is typically designated for ANA's A380 'Flying Honu' aircraft. Having previously experienced ANA's A380 Business Class from this very gate seven years prior, anticipation was high for the First Class product. Today's flight, however, departed from gate C9, necessitating a short five-minute walk after a lounge visit. The aircraft for this flight was the orange 'LA' A380, the third and final 'Flying Honu' delivered to ANA, named after the Hawaiian word for sun or sunset.
Before boarding, First Class passengers were granted access to the ANA Suites Lounge, located by gate C4. While smaller than the adjacent regular ANA Lounge, its exclusivity for First Class and Diamond members ensured a quiet and serene environment. The lounge offered a modest buffet selection, made-to-order noodles, and a bar. A cold Soba Udon and Ahi Tuna Poke were sampled, with care taken not to overindulge, preserving appetite for the highly anticipated onboard dining experience.
Boarding the ANA A380, the First Class cabin immediately impressed. Located on the upper deck, the cabin features an intimate eight-seat configuration. The initial impression of the private suite was one of immense space and abundant storage. The generous dimensions allowed for complete leg extension without reaching the footrest, while the large, almost 1.5-meter screen dominated the forward view. Multiple storage bins, including a large side compartment and two smaller ones, along with wide armrests, underscored the thoughtful design aimed at passenger comfort and convenience. The cabin felt full, indicating the popularity of this premium product.
Seat, Cabin & IFE
The ANA A380 First Class cabin, situated on the upper deck, is configured with eight private suites in a 1-2-1 layout, ensuring exclusivity and ample personal space. Each suite is a sanctuary featuring a closing door, enhancing privacy throughout the flight. The seat itself is exceptionally wide and converts into a generously sized lie-flat bed. Even for taller individuals, the bed offers significant length, allowing for comfortable sleep without any restrictions, with approximately a foot and a half of space remaining at the foot of the bed.
Storage is a standout feature, with numerous compartments including large side bins, two smaller bins, and space under the footrest for shoes or bags. The design also incorporates a dedicated literature pocket under the left armrest, complete with a specific holder for a water bottle. Two reading lights provide focused illumination, and a large vanity mirror is discreetly integrated for passenger use. The tray table is particularly well-designed, sliding out smoothly from the front, making it easy to deploy and stow. For rest, a plush blanket and a comfortable cardigan are provided for onboard use, while ANA pajamas can be taken home. An Edinger amenity kit, presented in an ANA tote bag, includes a luggage tag, Sensai lotion, cream, lip balm, earplugs, a dental kit, and an eye mask.
The In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) system is controlled via a responsive touchpad controller and displayed on a massive screen, approximately 1.5 meters in front of the seat. The intuitive layout offers a diverse range of entertainment options. A notable detail is the flight map, which incorporates elements of the 'Flying Honu' aircraft, matching the color of the specific plane flown. Connectivity is provided through complimentary Wi-Fi for First and Business Class passengers. While initially robust, the Wi-Fi proved intermittent after the first hour, requiring occasional toggling of airplane mode to restore connection. Noise-canceling Sony headphones are provided, featuring a unique ambient sound mode that can be activated by simply placing a palm over the right ear cup, allowing temporary awareness of external sounds without removing the headphones. The two First Class lavatories are exceptionally spacious, equipped with a full array of amenities, a small bench, and a Japanese toilet. A self-serve galley area at the front of the cabin offers additional snacks and amenities throughout the flight.
Food, Drinks & Service
The culinary experience in ANA First Class is designed to emulate fine dining, starting with hot towels and meticulous table setup by the crew. The main meal service commenced approximately three hours into the flight. Passengers are presented with a comprehensive menu, and for this particular flight, the 'Woku Japanese Cuisine' was selected. This multi-course meal was described as absolutely incredible, with every dish tasting delicious. The presentation, especially of the starters, was particularly praised for its artistry, truly elevating the onboard dining to a high-end restaurant experience. The meal service was extensive, lasting approximately three hours, reflecting the elaborate nature of the courses and the attentive pace of service.
Beyond the main meal, ANA offered a unique opportunity to purchase a special edition 100th anniversary Suntory whiskey for 50,000 JPY, limited to one bottle per passenger. This was noted as a significant value proposition compared to retail prices elsewhere. Throughout the flight, the galley area was stocked with self-serve snacks and amenities. For mid-flight refreshments, a large cup of matcha was enjoyed, followed by the ANA original noodles. These tonkatsu-style noodles, served with thin noodles, red pickled ginger, and flavored oil, provided a comforting and satisfying hot soupy snack, a perfect complement to a long-haul journey.
The service throughout the flight was consistently exceptional. The crew were highly attentive and proactive, anticipating needs and ensuring passenger comfort. A notable example was the flight attendant offering to make up the bed after the meal, transforming the seat into a luxurious sleeping environment. The crew's hospitality and efficiency contributed significantly to the overall positive impression of the flight, making the journey feel seamless and truly special from start to finish.
