If you are an avid skier or snowboarder, you know that getting ready for the winter season takes a lot of preparation. Warm clothes, storage space, gear (boots, skis and boards) needed. Nevertheless, if you are also passionate about technology, you will also want the best equipment to film and take photos with.
In a continuously changing world, one of the few things that you can be sure will last is your memories. And what can be better than capturing videos and photos of all your adventures, especially when nowadays' technology allows you to do this? Having a little action camera at hand while going down the slopes and capturing the images in real-time means that you can relive them time and time again from your home's comfort.
In today’s market, there is a multitude of HD action cameras that will help you tremendously in recording unique moments. And while you might think that you can film them with your phone, there are many reasons why using an action camera is better suited for this purpose.

Why you should use an action camera for sports instead of your regular camera

First, an action camera is very small and compact. This means that you can carry it around with little to no effort, mount it on your helmet, chest, ski poles, etc.
Second, the viewing angle of a standard camera is a much smaller one, made for objects in the near approach, as well as still objectives. An action camera will have a larger shooting angle (usually a fisheye lens) that allows you to capture more details.
Thirdly, action cameras are made specifically for sports, meaning that they are sturdier, protected by a waterproof case. And while your phone or regular camera is more expensive, a decent action camera will usually run under a 100$ range.

What you should know before buying an action camera

If you are new to the action cameras world and don’t know what to start with, there is no need to worry as you will find tips & tricks when choosing such a camera and what they are best suited for. It is very likely that if you are a beginner, you won’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on a GoPro camera, because you don’t want to risk losing or damaging it. In addition, you might want to learn how to use an action camera and make the best of it before plunging into an expensive purchase.

What should you be looking at when choosing an action camera?

1. Image quality and stabilization – having an action camera means precisely this, that you will capture action sports with it. To do this, you have to get a camera with excellent image quality that will capture your surroundings' details. Image stabilization means that the videos you are shooting while skiing or snowboarding are not shaky or distorted.

2. Waterproof case – most of the action cameras come with a waterproof case and it’s strongly recommended to have one because you don’t want to risk that water droplets or snow powder enter your camera and cause fogginess of the lens or interior, if not ruining your camera completely, altogether.

3. Accessories – you will need all kinds of mounts to have on hand so you can secure them on your helmet, ski poles or a chest strap. In this way, you will be able to capture images/videos from different points of view.

4. Battery life – most of the cameras come with two rechargeable batteries in the package and, in some cases, a charger. You need to make sure that you always have your batteries charged and ready to go; this way, you will not be surprised by your camera dying while you go down on the slopes. In addition, you need to make sure that the batteries can hold the charge in the cold weather, as some might not have this ability.

5. Remote controller – the vast majority of the cameras come with a remote controller, whether external or smartphone-controlled (by WiFi or Bluetooth connection). The advantage of having a remote controller is that you don’t have to hold your camera in your hands at all times (sometimes, this is not even possible). You can turn on / off the recording by simply pushing a button on the remote (possible even when wearing gloves). Having an external remote also means that you do not carry your phone around (and risk smashing it in case of a fall), which is a plus compared to the remotes that you can install on your phone.

6. WiFi / Bluetooth connection – nowadays, most people want to share in real-time on their social media what happens in their lives. Having a WiFi or a Bluetooth connection means that you can download your images/videos on your smartphone and immediately share them with your friends and family. Also, it is the easiest way of transferring the media instead of carrying an extra USB cable and a laptop.

With all these criteria in mind, let’s look at some action cameras on the market that will be perfect for both beginners and advanced users, but will not break the bank.

With a professional video quality offered by ultra HD 4K video recording, you can capture 4K 25fps/2.7K 30fps/1080P 60fps for a crisp, lifelike video. The AKASO EK7000 Camera allows you to choose the shooting mode that suits you best by selecting from options such as single photos, burst photos (12 MP at 30 fps), or time-lapse mode. A 170-degree wide-angle lens for a broad perspective, built-in WiFi, allows you to connect directly to your smartphone/tablet and instantly share content on your social media, a waterproof case for outdoor activities, and remote control to switch between camera modes, will make this camera your best companion.
AKASO EK7000 Camera comes with a multitude of accessories (included in the package without any further charge): a waterproof case, helmet mounts, bandages, harnesses, bicycle stand, remote controller, 2x 1050mAh batteries and AC charger. Small, with a very reasonable price and easy to use, it’s the perfect gadget for outdoor activities such as snowmobiling, skiing, cycling, sledding, cliff jumping and even snorkeling and other underwater sports.
While the very helpful customer service will attend to any issues that may occur over time, the software might prove tricky to use sometimes, but nothing cannot be overcome by a little online research.

PROS:
- Small and compact;
- Affordable;
- Lots of accessories included in the package;

CONS:

- Software is not very user-friendly;
- 4k video recording resolution is very similar to the 1080p one.

Being the upgraded version of the EK7000 series, AKASO Brave 4 features  4K/24fps, 2K/30fps and 1080P/60FPS video resolution and 20MP photos, and adjustable view angle and a built-in gyroscope for anti-shaking and image stabilization. Intended for any outdoor sport, it is equipped with a 100 Ft. waterproof camera (secured by a waterproof case), 2 rechargeable 1050mAh batteries that can each record up to 90 minutes and an WiFi option that make it easy for you to monitor, download and share your footings in an instant.
Like the previous series, AKASO Brave 4 also comes equipped with various accessories such as remote controller, 2x 1050mAh batteries (and batteries charger), multiple mounts for bicycles, helmet, etc. appropriate for any outdoor activities. The anti-shaking technology and image stabilization will allow you to capture the most accurate images, whether skiing or snowboarding, because this little camera will keep the image stable even on the most abrupt slope.
Despite the numerous accessories included (there is also a leaflet inside a package that claims they will send you free batteries and accessories if you leave them a 5-star review), the sound quality is quite mediocre. If you are planning to post videos with music in the background, this might not be such a deal-breaker; however, you should be aware that larger videos are automatically split into successive files and the beginning and end of each might be hard to detect.

PROS:

- Image stabilization feature;
- Resistant to minor/mild crashes;
- Good quality pictures/videos.

CONS:

- Poor sound quality;
- Card slot and battery doors do not close properly;
- The app tends to crash/work slow repeatedly.

APEMAN A80 is an action camera that features three video options: 4K 24 FPS / 2k 30 FPS / 1080P / 60FPS and 20 MP photo resolution; with an anti-shaking technology, an adjustable wide-angle (170°, 140°, 110°, and 70°), you are guaranteed to get smooth images from every outdoor activity.

Both video and photo options offer you modes to choose from (video: support loop recording, car mode, diving mode/photo: timer – shoot, time-lapse) to cover all the surrounding changes precisely when they happen. Once you captured everything you desired, the built-in WiFi and HDMI output (USB and AV are also available) will make it easy for you to connect your TV, projector or smart gadget in order to watch and edit your footage.
Compact, sturdy and very light, with good battery life and a case that will protect it from water when high up on a mountain, this is an excellent beginner action camera. The package comes with extra accessories (which means you will save a pretty penny) and rechargeable batteries included, so you will only need an SD card to start using your action camera. Potent in all kinds of lighting, both indoors and outdoors, you just need to make sure you adjust your ISO accordingly.
On to the disadvantages of this camera, just like its competitor AKASO, the claim of shooting in 4k is only a claim. The maximum resolution is 1080p. Another aspect you should consider is that for long videos, the software will automatically fragment them into smaller ones. You will need to edit them in post-processing to get the full video you initially shot.

PROS:

Small, compact and sturdy;
Affordable price, especially for all the accessories included;
Performs well under water and in good lighting conditions.

CONS:

Does not shoot in 4k as claimed;
Quite poor battery life.

Featuring a new and improved design, one of the benefits of the new Vision3 Pro is that it comes equipped with a touchscreen, an adjustable wide-angle that lets you choose between 70°,110°,140° and 170°. A 2.4GHz wireless wrist remote control for when you need to switch the modes on your camera from filming to photo mode is also included. You will be able to record videos in 4K/30FPS, take pictures with the 16MP resolution, and bring the subject closer to the 4X zoom.

The package will get to you with various accessories and even 2x 1050 mah batteries. Not only is this a great little camera to be used on multiple outdoor activities (it also includes a waterproof case), but it is also one of the best options to be used for skiing and snowboarding. You can easily put the camera on the helmet and ski pole with the mounts included; the remote is very useful when you are wearing gloves and the batteries hold the charge even in lower temperatures.

The main disadvantage that you will get with this camera is the sound quality; the seller also warns that while being in the waterproof case, the camera will not record the sound. However, if this is not a problem for you, if you only need images or are willing to edit your videos, this camera is otherwise a good acquisition.

PROS:

Records in 4k;
A multitude of accessories that come in the package.

CONS:

Low sound quality.

One of the most basic models from those presented and the one with the best price, CAMPARK ACT74 might be the option for you if you are looking for a no-fuss action camera. This compact little camera will record 4k video (with a Sony sensor), take photos at 16M and its 170°Ultra wide-angle lens will capture all the details in the background. The remote control is WiFi controlled, meaning that you can operate your camera directly from your smartphone and share files on your social media instantly.

It holds up to any kind of activity, whether that means deep powder snow skiing, snowboarding, or using it as an off-road dashcam. Due to the waterproof, airtight case that it comes equipped with, enables you to take the action shots/videos you wish. You can mount it on your helmet, on your chest or even on your poles because the package includes accessories that accommodate all these needs. Furthermore, you will also find dual rechargeable lithium batteries and charger, with a battery life up to 180 hours.

As the previously listed models, the sound quality is not a strong feature for Campark either. Also, having a remote controlled by smartphone means that your WiFi connection will be taken over by the camera and you will have to have the phone permanently on you, which might not always be a good idea, especially in extreme conditions, like skiing or snowboarding.

PROS:

Affordable price;
Easy to use;

CONS:

Sound quality;
Remote operated by smartphone;
Overall, a short life spawn.

Compared to the previous cameras presented, COOAU features the upgraded chip with 7 layers of optical glass lens, which can shoot ultra HD 4K videos and 20 MP photos. It comes equipped with EIS stabilization to prevent shakiness for any extreme sports such as skiing or snowboarding, a built-in and external microphone to capture all the scenery sounds and a remote controller to allow you not to hold your camera in your hands at all times. Once you download the preset app on your smartphone, you can control and adjust the camera's settings.

The package comes with a waterproof case and over 20 accessories that can be used in a multitude of ways. These include mounting them on your helmet, ski poles or chest to get you the most details on your 4k videos.
The remote control function implies that you will not have to carry your phone with you while using the camera. Moreover, the company offers an instructional video that will spare you the hassle of researching online how-to’s and a well-written manual that explains all the functions.

One of the features that you need to pay attention to is the viewing screen, which is quite small and difficult to view on. Also, keeping it in the waterproof case will prologue its life because the camera is not made for sustaining accidents that might happen during skiing or snowboarding.

PROS:

Image stabilization;
External microphone;
Remote controller.

CONS:

Not very sturdy;
Poor quality of the viewing screen.

To sum up everything detailed above, make sure that before you are buying your first (or next) action camera, you will consider the following features:

It comes with a waterproof case that will protect your camera from any possible droplets from the snow;
It comes with mounts for helmet, ski poles or a chest strap;
It has an image stabilization function that will allow you to shoot explicit videos when going down on the snow-capped hills;
It has a good battery life that withstands the cold weather;
Lastly, it is easy to use, so you do not spend more time operating it than shooting with it.

Overall, the most important thing to remember is to relax, enjoy the scenery and make memories that will certainly last more than any camera on the market!
